Airstream is one the most iconic brands in American automotive industry. These unique vehicles were created to inspire wanderlust and a desire for exploration. They are a classic example of the vintage-modern aesthetic. Airstream has a reputation for the distinctive silver bullet finish.
The brand was started in Culver City, California in 1930s. It began as a small trailer operation. Airstream moved from its original location in Iowa to Jackson Center, Ohio, when the business grew. In the early 1970s, it expanded its line of trailers with the Argosy brand. In the 1990s, Airstream introduced Class A motorhomes. They were first produced in 7.6- and 8.5-m models. Airstream ended production of Class A motorhomes around 2006.
Airstreams are made out of aircraft-grade aluminum alloy. They are lighter than fiberglass and easier to tow. They are strong and durable, so they can withstand most weather conditions. However, they come at a high price. Airstream does not make low-quality, stripped-down trailers. Airstream's goal is to appeal to the middle class.

They are made from a steel frame and an aluminum interior shell. The shell is then insulated and riveted on to the frame. This creates a leakproof cabin. Riveting can be a time-consuming process. Airstream prides itself in using American labor when making these products. They only use high-quality labor and materials to create the most beautiful Airstreams.
In 1931, Airstream was the first to manufacture trailers. There were many other companies making camping trailers. Many of these companies couldn't continue due to the Great Depression or World War II. There were only 400 trailer manufacturers in America in 1937. The surge in popularity of camping trailers was due to travelers' pent-up demand.
Wally Byam was born in Baker City, Oregon and attended Stanford University. After graduating, he went to work at Lockheed Aircraft where he became an advertising executive. He was the inventor of innovative travel trailers after he re-opened Lockheed Aircraft in 1947. These were easily towable and included a stove, refrigerator, and ice chest. He was a prolific thinker, having learned a lot from his work with airplanes.
Airstream started a second manufacturing plant after it relocated to Jackson Center, Ohio. It was a great location. It was easy and convenient to get to the highway. Additionally, the factory was close by the Ohio River, a popular place for recreation and camping.

Today, Airstream has a full lineup of Interstate touring coaches, from entry level Interstate Nineteen to luxurious Interstate Sixty-Eight. Airstream's latest products have solid-wood cabinets and Kohler faucets for bathrooms. It also sells marine-grade flooring and adjustable lighting. The company is also planning to add connected technology products to its product lineup.
The company has just unveiled the eStream concept, a fully-electric camping trailer. This electric vehicle looks a modern take on the Airstream. The company intends to add more products in future.
