Tahoe is a long-loved destination. The scenic shoreline is lined with umbrellas and sun-drenched kids in the summer. Skiers will enjoy snowy adventures in the winter season. Aside from the breathtaking scenery, the region is home to excellent outdoor recreation. The lake offers scenic cruises, mountain gondola rides and four-season activities.

The first inhabitants of the area were the native Washoe tribe who occupied it thousands years ago. For many generations, the lake was a sacred place for the Washoe. In the mid-1800s, white settlers arrived and forced the tribe from the land. George Whittel, Jr., a lumber magnate, was responsible in the early 1900s for the development of the north coast. He built a narrow gauge railway that connected Truckee with Tahoe City. He also intended to build a Casino.

Since the beginning of time, the lake was a popular location for entertainment and film production. Many classic American movies were shot here. Mount Tallac was the backdrop to Bonanza's opening sequence. A Place in the Sun and True Lies were also made.

A number of casinos and high-end shops can be found on the Nevada side. In addition, the lake has become a popular skiing destination. The Lake Tahoe area was popularized by the 1960 Winter Olympics.

Tahoe derives its name from the Washoe da owa ga, meaning "water in a high area". The Lake is surrounded with majestic mountain peaks, ranging in height from 8,000 to 10,000 ft. The development on the eastern shore is less than that on the western shore.

The border of Nevada and California is the Lake Tahoe Basin. The United States Forest Service manages 75% of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. It's home to some the most breathtaking landscapes in the country. It is a popular destination for outdoor recreation and hiking. It is known for its beautiful water clarity.

Lake Tahoe is a year round attraction featuring scenic shorelines, mountain-gondola rides, and exceptional skiing. There are many events throughout the year including the Brews Jazz and Funk Fest in August and Lake Tahoe Food and Wine Festivals in September. The Tahoe Loop Drive is a 100-mile loop that circles the lake. There are many beautiful views to be taken in the area.

The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit assesses environmental conditions, monitors lake clarity and assesses meteorology around the lake. It also provides education and outreach services. The "State of the Lake", an annual report produced by the agency, assesses the state of the lake. The report details changes to the lake's transparency, depth, and surrounding environment. The rate of clarity loss has decreased due to improved environmental conditions in the watershed.
